Mark S from Surgery Without Research Top Ten – Reckless Records London

Mark S from Surgery Without Research Top Ten

A Top Ten from Mark of the awesome Surgery Without Research!

1) There’s No Power Without Control - Conflict.

Conflict was my local band growing up in London SE9 and we were friends and followed them everywhere. As a band they walked it liked they talked it and never compromised. Losing Colin this summer has hit hard, both on a personal level and to the punk community. RIP Col.

2) God Save The Queen - Sex Pistols.

Practically perfect in every way.
I’d heard other songs from the Pistols before this one but this is the one that kicked me into touch. This was the moment when I became Punk, this is the moment when I wanted to play guitar, this is the moment when I opened my eyes and ears to the world.

3) Born To Lose - The Heartbreakers.

The epitome of dirty Rock ‘n Roll. They had the lot, the tunes, the attitude, the image, the swagger. And then blew it all up with smack. Thunders was an excellent guitarist and L.A.M.F. is a stellar piece of work.

4) Mother Earth - Crass.

My mate gave me a copy of Stations Of The Crass along with the words “This is awful, you’ll probably like it…” I got it home, dropped the needle on it, and two things happened. 1) my life changed direction forever and nothing was ever the same again. And 2) my mum started banging on the ceiling with the broom handle screaming at me to turn it off.

5) Walk On By - The Stranglers.

I love a good cover and this one is the best. A masterclass in taking a melancholy song about lost love and turning it into something that says “I’m going to kill you and bury your body in the woods”.

6) In A Rut - The Ruts.

The first time I heard this one it just captivated me. The lyrics were bleak but positive in equal measure. And then we lost Malcolm a couple of years later and it became even more poignant to me. I wonder what they would have become had he stayed with us?

7) Legion - Theatre Of Hate.

Thumping bass, grating guitars, crisp drums, and a very unique vocal delivery of some very steering and clever lyrics. I love a bit of ToH and for me this is their best moment.

8) Bleed For Me - Dead Kennedys.

I could pick just about anything from DK’s back catalog but this one is a solid 10/10 for me. I got to see them twice with Jello and both times they were mental. The DK’s introduced me to stage diving.

9) Wreckin’ Crew - The Meteors.

Elvis and Rock ‘n Roll was king in my house when I was a lad so getting into The Meteors was an easy step. Saw them loads back in the 80’s and they were some of the most lively gigs I’ve ever attended, fun times.

10) Religious Wars - Subhumans.

I despise organised religion in all forms and this song says all you need to know about the subject. The lyrics are on point and I love how Dick delivers them, he does this thing where he kinda slides into pitch. Brilliant.
