Splendid set from the year when I was born, good old Grooverider. I've spent several nights dancing to this at my friend's flat. Nothing warms my heart like reading old heads' Youtube comments on those tracks from 1991-93, reminiscing about the best time of their lives... I totally recommend reading the book "Altered State: The Story of Ecstasy Culture and Acid House" and digging into www.ravetapepacks.com, an incredible online archive.
REGGAE SPECIALISTS - MARCEL (MIXTAPE)
A killer tape from Red Lebanese, a studio/label/publishing house in Paris. A fascinating compilation of archival recordings ranging from deliverances thru rehearsals to sessions. HIGHLY reccommended.
KING DOUDOU - YIN-YANG STREET MIX
I love Low Jack and his label - Editions Gravats. Here's a restless and playful reggeaton-and-beyond mix from King Doudou. We were blasting it with friends at the carnival in Baranquilla. Perfect soundtrack to working out at home while dreaming of partying on the streets :(
ZAUMNE - CONTACT
Zaumne is a very talented Polish musician working with trippy ASMR-like sounds, researching fake and real emotion. Perfect as a cocoon to nest into when you know you should go to bed but know that sleep won't come anytime soon... This tape has been released by
BAS, a great Warsaw-based label/promoter.
SOLID SPACE - SPACE MUSEUM
Absolute classic. Tobi from Diät did some bootlegs and I got this tape at one of their shows, must have played it a million times.
TOTAL CONTROL - TOTAL CONTROL
Compliation tape: the first four 7-inches of everyone's favourite punk band. Released in 2013 by a Polish bloke, all killer no filler, includes a Swell Maps cover.
OMEN - PROL
Amazing full-legth release by the Berlin-based artist. Trippy, complex, dreamy, sometimes industrial, sometimes intimate experimental electronics. She's my old flatmate so I couldn't listen to her music too much, but not we don't live together anymore so finally I'm free to play her tapes as often as I want :} Beautiful artwork by Marijn Degenaar.
ITCHY BUGGER - DONE ONE
Got this tape from Josh from Diät at the gathering he organized at the l o v e l y Oase bar before he was moving back to Australia, a sweet farewell gift with his solo material. In more elaborate words of Low Company who later released it on vinyl: "When we heard it we were blown away, and wasted no time in emotionally blackmailing him into letting us press an LP version. So here you have it, the maiden release on our softly-softly shop label (is it softly softly if you say it out loud?), which we started purely so we could give this incredible record the run it deserves. Musically, it's a wry, whimsical, oddly poignant DIY/jangle/part-time-punk micro-odyssey that feels like the introspective, acid-bleary yin to Heavy Metal’s cranked-up hooligan yang."
SILLA ELÉCTRICA - V.A PUNK COLOMBIA 2018
Colombia is one of the only countries that still keep my faith in the punk scene. My band URIN did a two-week tour there with Primer Regimen in February this year, which now feels like centuries ago, and it was a pretty mental experience. Hopefully everyone knows and loves the popular acts like
Muro by now, but there's a lot of other great bands worth checking out, and this compilation is a great starting point.
TOMMY WRIGHT III - RUNNIN-N-GUNNIN'
Ok now I'm cheating a bit as I don't own this tape but I'm a little obsessed with Memphis rap and want to have that represented on this list so here we go.... Forever impressed.
