Well Record Store Day finally came around, which I missed as I was playing in Berlin, and it sounds like it was pretty fun. It sounded like it was a lot quieter in Soho this year (I guess since they stopped the bands playing on the stage outside and started telling people off for playing music – bring back the bin Jungalist – its got quieter who’d have guessed that would have happened lol. Thanks a lot to the wicked Pizza Pilgrims and Honest Burgers for the killer food they gave all the staff to get through the day. It went down very well – bad boy pizzas and burgers! We made a point of ordering just stock that we would be able to sell in the future (not just on the day) so we had the Girls in the Garage comps, Spacemen 3, Television Personalities, Charles Earland, Hopeton Lewis, Bert Jansch etc. All titles by artists we do well with normally.
Its been a bit quiet on the buying front (it always is round RSD) – nobody wants to come in when its really busy. But when I got back yesterday I did see that loads of nice hardcore and metal had come in – from Heresy to Slipknot. Lots of new titles too.
We also had a large Felt collection, with most of their LPs and 12″s and a few singles (although I don’t think the first one was there – certainly not their debut). I absolutely love Felt. One of the best bands ever. Dreamy guitar, weird sound. When they are on point, they are the greatest band of all time.
It seems like plenty of records keep rolling in on the Soul and Dance side. Just yesterday a fairly large Soul collection came in. This is the third large Soul collection in the last few weeks and like all of them its a bit tatty but has some decent titles. As well as your standard (but good) titles like Curtis Mayfield, Roy Ayers, Tamiko Jones etc there were a few Alice Coltrane titles in this batch and its always nice to have some original US Alice Coltrane LPs in the shop.
I managed to get all the Rock reductions done yesterday – sections that got slashed the most were the Avant Garde, Country and Folk sections. Lots of good titles got a heavy reduction to make space. Any larger items also got a big reduction. So now is the time to come and get a bargain.
